Bolster Chair

FAS Bolster Chairs are an excellent seating alternative for

the W-sitter. W Position may lead to internal rotation and

adduction of the hips and limits the child’s ability to move into

and out of sitting position. Bolster Chairs maintain hip flexion

and abduction with external rotation, a position that promotes

movement in sitting. They are most appropriate for spastic &

athetoid children who need a wide base of support and hip

flexion with abduction to achieve their best pelvic and trunk

alignment for sitting. With lateral pelvic supports, the bolster

chairs promote symmetrical weight bearing so that the child

can use both hands freely for manipulation. The adjustable

foot supports prevent the legs from extending and yet do not

restrain the feet. If the child has flexor spasticity in sitting, the

foot supports can be reversed. Either position assists in

maintaining the hips and knees at 90º to keep the child’s centre

of gravity over the base of support.

Models SB3CCS and SB4CCS have a forward and

lateral trunk support system. This system allows the child to

sit with controlled trunk flexion. Additional trunk support

further inhibits the tendency for extensor spasm, adds

symmetry, and limits trunk movement to the range that the

child can control. The lateral supports adjust to accommodate
